This intimate camp consists of five expedition-style tents of light airy canvas on slightly raised decking, each with views of the surrounding floodplain. Each tent, stylishly furnished and designed by Dereck and Beverly, invokes their ethos of exploration; offering a campaign writing desk, private verandah plus en-suite facilities, double vanities and indoor shower. Fans and careful open-air design maintain a comfortable climate for rest and relaxation. The main area is under sweeping marquee canvas, on raised decking and consists of an open-concept dining and lounge area that opens to the outdoors on all sides.

The camp prides itself on offering an extraordinary and diverse wildlife experience. The area is renowned for regular sightings of a diverse range of species, including large herds of elephant, buffalo, lechwe, kudu, tsessebe and giraffe. Hippo trudge through the swamps creating their channels and paths daily. Lions, leopards, wild dog and hyenas are the most commonly seen predators.

Duba Explorers Camp offers a wide range of wildlife viewing opportunities ranging from guided walks, open vehicle wildlife viewing drives, mekoros (dugout canoes) that silently glide along the Okavango Delta and a  specially adapted photographic orientated flat bottomed aluminium motorboat.

THE RENOWNED DUBA PLAINS CAMP SITS IN THE HEART OF THE OKAVANGO DELTA. A RECENT GUEST SAID IT ALL, “I AM NOT A RELIGIOUS PERSON, BUT I NOW UNDERSTAND THAT THE GARDEN OF EDEN CAN, IN FACT, BE FOUND AT DUBA PLAINS.”

Duba Plains Camp was designed to blend into the forest and to take advantage of the shapes and textures of the shade but also to evoke the old classic African safari style of the 1920s. It is a wildlife connoisseur’s getaway with literally thousands of animals in an almost endless pattern across the flood plains.

This area is one that our owners, National Geographic filmmakers, conservationists and explorers, Dereck and Beverly Joubert, chose as their home. We are the only operator on the concession, thereby offering guests the ultimate opportunity for private wildlife sightings.

All five bespoke suites are raised on recycled railway sleeper decking, offering guests amazing views of the surrounding floodplain and wildlife parading past. Each suite offers beautifully appointed en-suite facilities including indoor and outdoor showers, luxurious bath, lounge area, as well as opportunities for private dining. Ceiling fans and an environmentally friendly air-conditioning system over your bed maintain a comfortable climate for rest and relaxation.

Enjoy your own private plunge pool and outdoor undercover sala rest area. The main area consists of a large raised indoor and outdoor dining area, comfortable lounge with private dining areas, wine cellar and library. Our media room is used for photographic work by guests.

Duba Plains prides itself on its extraordinary wildlife experiences and intimate up-close exposure to the best of the best wildlife, from lions and leopards to elephants, buffalo and lechwe as well as interesting Kalahari species like aardwolf and pangolin.

The camp is located on a remote stretch of the Selinda Spillway, close to the heart of the pristine 130,000-hecatre private Selinda Reserve. YOU COULD EASILY SPEND A LIFETIME IN THIS AMAZING PLACE AND STILL FIND WONDER IN EVERYTHING YOU SEE. NOTHING IS MORE SPECTACULAR THAN THE SUN RISING SLOWLY AT SELINDA AND IS A MOMENT IN TIME…

Set in one of the most pristine wilderness areas left on our planet, Selinda Camp rests on the banks of the eastern Selinda Spillway in northern Botswana’s startlingly beautiful, remote and private 130,000-hectare Selinda Reserve.

The Selinda Spillway starts here and is an ancient waterway which flows in two directions, weaving its way through the landscape as it links the far-reaches of the vast Okavango Delta in the south with the Linyanti wetlands in the east, receiving water from both. Further east is the Savute Channel, Chobe and the mighty Zambezi. North lies Namibia’s Caprivi Strip and Angola.

Home to some of the largest herds of elephant and buffalo left in Southern Africa, this powerful place is one of the last great bastions of the endangered African wild dog – lycaon pictus – the “painted wolf”.

This is one of Botswana’s, if not Africa’s, finest wildlife areas and it provides a base from which researchers are taking important strides in the effort to conserve and protect iconic species like elephants and Africa’s big cats.

NOT MORE THAN 30 KILOMETRES FROM THE EXACT LOCATION WHERE WE FIND SELINDA CAMP TODAY, DAVID LIVINGSTONE ARRIVED ABOUT 170 YEARS AGO. HE WAS A SCOTTISH MISSIONARY. MANY FEEL HE FAILED IN HIS MISSION BECAUSE HE CAME WITH A RIFLE IN ONE HAND, A CROSS IN THE OTHER AND YET NEVER CONVERTED A SINGLE PERSON TO CHRISTIANITY. BUT HE ALSO CAME ARMED WITH A MISSION TO SOW THE SEEDS THAT WOULD STOP SLAVERY. IN THIS, HE ULTIMATELY DID SUCCEED.

He crossed through Botswana not far from Selinda camp. It was an important stop because he forged the river and went on to a nearby village called Sangwali, across the Linyanti swamp, where he met with the chief of the Mokololo in a massive village. It was here that he discovered large numbers of Bayei as slaves of the Mokololo. Using his mission’s teachings, he started to convince the local chiefs to release their slaves.

It was also from here that he embarked on two expeditions; one to Luanda, Angola to deliver post and send his findings off to the London Mission Society. This took two years. He ‘borrowed’ some porters and the expedition took so long their wives wrote them off and remarried. When he returned, he was told of a waterfall nearby, (by comparison to his last trip) and the Mokololo trusted him enough by then to take him downstream to show him. They used massive ten man Mekoros (dugout canoes). The waterfall he named after his Queen, and never returned to Selinda.

The 2 bedroom, private Selinda Suite represents a meeting place of three cultures: European, Mokololo and Bayei. An intersection in one’s journey to meet interesting people around the fire, all centered around a common good: the abandonment of persecution: of people, wildlife and of the planet. An opportunity to experience a deep love and appreciation of this continent and ensuring extraordinary expeditions into the Selinda Reserve and beyond.

ZARAFA CAMP IS AN INTIMATE, FOUR ROOM, EXQUISITE TENTED CAMP LOCATED ON THE PRIVATE 130,000-HECTARE SELINDA RESERVE IN NORTHERN BOTSWANA. FEW CAMPS RIVAL THE LOCATION OF THIS LITTLE GEM, BOTSWANA’S FIRST RELAIS & CHATEAUX PROPERTY. EVERY AREA OF THE CAMP HAS A MAGNIFICENT VIEW. ZARAFA HAS SUCCEEDED IN SUCCESSFULLY RETAINING A CLEARLY AFRICAN FEEL, WHILE BALANCING THE DELICATE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE FORMAL AND YOUR PERSONAL, ROMANCE AND ADVENTURE.

Dereck & Beverly Joubert created what they believe to be the best and most environmentally innovative safari camp, possibly the “greenest” luxury safari camp in Africa. Only recycled hardwoods and canvas were used in the construction and all the camp’s electricity comes from its solar farm while a ‘bio gas’ plant recycles kitchen waste into usable cooking gas.

Entering through the heavy wood Swahili doors, the guest tents measure an average 100m2 under beige, flowing canvas. The large bedroom and lounge are connected to an open layout bathroom with copper claw foot bath, indoor shower, and double basins. Over the beds is an “Evening Breeze” cooling system.

Decking around the tent leads to the private plunge pool and full-body outdoor shower, all with views of pristine Botswana wilderness. In-room massages are available.

The camp’s sizable main lounge is joined by adjacent library, indoor/outdoor dining area and curio shop.

Zarafa boasts staggering year round classic wildlife populations such as leopard, lion, elephant, buffalo, Red lechwe, zebra and giraffe. This is also a refuge for some of the more uncommon species such as African wild dog, cheetah, roan and sable. For birders the nearby African skimmer colony is a highlight, as are the antics of the black egret on the shores of Zibadianja Lagoon.

THE ZARAFA DHOW SUITE IS THE ULTIMATE PRIVATE SAFARI RETREAT, OFFERING 210M2 OF UNDERSTATED OPULENCE IN ONE OF AFRICA’S LAST GREAT WILDERNESSES – THE PRIVATE 130,000-HECTARE SELINDA RESERVE IN NORTHERN BOTSWANA. THE DHOW SUITE IS COMPLETELY AUTONOMOUS, OFFERING GUESTS PRIVATE SERVICES OF CAMP STAFF, PRIVATE WILDLIFE VIEWING VEHICLE AND GUIDE. IDEALLY SUITED FOR THOSE SMALL INTIMATE GROUPS OF FRIENDS OR FAMILY LOOKING FOR EXCLUSIVITY AND WHO WANT TO TRULY IMMERSE THEMSELVES IN THE GRANDEUR OF A CLASSIC SAFARI EXPERIENCE.

With two lavish bedrooms on either side of a sumptuous lounge and dining room, the ambience is one of complete harmony with nature, with breathtaking, elevated views out over the Zibadianja Lagoon. A multi-level deck with a pool, adds to the palatial expanse of living space, all inspired by the miracle of wild Africa.

That miracle is embodied by the story of Zarafa, the “beloved one” – a Nubian giraffe given to Charles X of France by the Viceroy of Egypt in 1826. The Dhow Suite is named after this most traditional of vessels, and the role it played in Zarafa’s own, fascinating “safari”.

The East African influence in the suites is tangible, with Zanzibari doors adding unique flavour to the rich interiors. Each bedroom has its own fireplace and huge copper baths, positioned to make the most of the views out over the lagoon. Dinner takes place either in the indoor dining room or outside, under a canopy of stars.

The villa concept takes its lead from the old-world elegance of the 1920s, when safari was in its infancy and yet managed to encompass a style and grace all of its own. Think Karen Blixen, lead crystal and Limoges, Mozart playing on a gramophone and a million stars twinkling in the Milky Way overhead…

It is a “beloved suite” and the ideal place for people to not just connect with Africa, but also reconnect with one another.
