MARA EXPEDITION CAMP IS A PLACE WHERE LIONS OWN THE NIGHT AND HIPPOS STAKE CLAIM TO VAST TERRITORIES, WHERE WE SUBMIT TO THE SUPREME POWER OF WILD AFRICA AND TAKE OUR LEAD FROM MOTHER NATURE. ENJOY A JOURNEY OF DISCOVERY WHERE LESSONS LEARNED WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE AND THE WAY YOU VIEW THE WORLD.

This a place of learning, where Africa teaches lessons that will change the way you view the world in one of the most incredible classrooms on the planet – the incomparable Maasai Mara.

Mara Expedition Camp has been built on a small bend in the Ntiakitiak River, where a thick riverine forest meets the unending savannah in the north-central section of the Maasai Mara.

It is a perfect hideout for this small, intimate camp, which has been constructed in the spirit of mobility and impermanence out of deference to the wilderness, which surrounds it.

There is an air of yesteryear in its design, which draws stylistic reference from the old, authentic expedition camps of the colonial era. Temporary and transient in atmosphere, there is nonetheless a perfect blend of comfort, adventure and harmony in the camp’s five,
custom-designed tents.

Set at ground level and shaded by a forest’s canopy,  each tent is decorated with an assembly of what early explorers may have had with them – bucket showers, brass chandeliers, old Indian campaign chests, rich leather and hardwood furniture – combined with rich textiles and soft cottons.

But it is out on the plains of the Maasai Mara, and the adjacent private Mara North Conservancy, that guests really connect with Africa and live the explorer experience, surrounded by wildlife.

This is in prime lion and leopard territory with the annual wildebeest and zebra migration passing literally in front of your tent, offering you the chance to witness one of the miracles of nature first-hand from the comfort of your verandah.

PREPARE FOR AN UNPARALLELED ADVENTURE INTO ONE OF THE MOST ICONIC WILDLIFE DESTINATIONS ON THE PLANET, WHERE THE BATTLE FOR SURVIVAL PLAYS OUT IN FRONT OF YOU EACH AND EVERY DAY. MARA PLAINS CAMP IS LOCATED ON A BEND OF THE NTIAKITIAK RIVER IN THE 35,000-ACRE PRIVATE OLARE MOTOROGI CONSERVANCY ADJOINING KENYA’S MAASAI MARA NATIONAL RESERVE.

Walk across the suspended bridge on arrival, follow a trail through a thick, riverine forest to some giant steps, to be greeted by an endless horizon with one, single, flat-topped acacia – the quintessential shape of East Africa – right in your line of sight on the wildlife filled plains beyond.

Mara Plains Camp offers a second-to-none experience in game-viewing, romance, adventure, discovery,
exploration and outstanding accommodation.

When sitting in the middle of one of the richest wild ecosystems in the world its exceptionally important not to try and upstage what nature has provided, so the design of Mara Plains is one of understatement and quiet class. The decor pays homage to the essence of East Africa, Maasai and ancient Swahili heritage which is reflected in large wooden doors from the coastal island of Lamu. Accents of deep red and purple honour the great Maasai chiefs and warriors who call this area home.

Add to this cultural amalgam a nod to the colonial era, with rich leathers, copper and brass used in expedition-style campaign furniture and you have a lavish, residential atmosphere which complements, rather than overwhelms the surrounding wilderness.

One of only five camps in the private Olare Motorogi Conservancy and with traversing rights into Mara North, guests have unrivalled access to more than 100,000 acres of exclusive, low vehicle-density, high-game density land as well as unfettered access to the Maasai Mara’s additional 375,000 acres.

“NYIKA” MEANS “LARGE PLAINS OR GREAT PLAINS” AND AS SUCH MARA NYIKA IS THE PERFECT SISTER CAMP TO MARA PLAINS IN KENYA. IT RINGS WITH THE ROMANCE OF EAST AFRICA, WHERE LIGHT CANVAS FLAPS IN THE BREEZE AS WILDEBEEST AND ZEBRAS CALL TO EACH OTHER ACROSS THE VAST OPEN PLAINS AND AT TWILIGHT YOU HEAR “SIMBA”, THE GREAT LION’S ROAR ACROSS THE NYIKA.

This a place of learning, where Africa teaches lessons that will change the way you view the world in one of the most incredible classrooms on the planet – the incomparable Maasai Mara.

Many may think of Mara Nyika as a tree top camp, with the walkways from tent to the main area giving a feel of a tree house under canvas but the camp’s ethic and inspiration is still one of exploration and adventure – a sense of impermanence in this ever-changing world.

Privacy in this camp is the key to understanding it. Privacy to live, think, explore, be romantic and be pampered – all the while with one of the most spectacular backdrops Africa can provide.

Mara Nyika is unique in that it allows guests to explore the private and exclusive 50 000-acre Naboisho Conservancy in which it is located and further afield with safari drives into the Maasai Mara Reserve. Each guest’s stay enables us to support over 500 Maasai families with a sustainable livelihood through the payment of conservation fees, ensuring the preservation of wildlife in this vital corridor of the Maasai Mara eco-system.

Many of our guests would spend a few days in Mara Nyika combined with a stay at either our Mara Expedition or Mara Plains Camp to get exposure to all three wildlife areas, namely the private Olare Motorogi and Naboisho Conservancies and Maasai Mara Reserve. Each wildlife experience from our camps is unique and offers different faces of the Masai Mara.

IN KEEPING WITH OUR STYLE OF ADDING A TWO BEDROOM SUITE TO SELECT CAMPS, KENYA’S MARA NYIKA CAMP WILL ALSO OFFER GUESTS A BEAUTIFUL TWO BEDROOM SUITE CALLED THE JAHAZI SUITE, TO MATCH THE FAMOUS ZARAFA DHOW SUITE IN BOTSWANA.

This suite fits our love of the Swahili sailing culture and here, in the Jahazi Suite, we see a wonderful meeting place in the design of that culture, the Maasai and early explorers.

The suite is made up of a series of interconnected tents that can accommodate a family or two couples travelling. It offers the services of a private lounge and dining area,  butler, guide and wildlife viewing vehicle as well as exercise equipment and other home-away-from-home facilities.

The Jahazi Suite is designed as a private villa where guests can share quality time with each other, or as a family, and arrange their own bespoke safari experience, with complete flexibility.
